South Korean singer-songwriter Paul Kim, one of the country’s most beloved vocalists, officially enters English-language pop with the release of his first English-language single, “Love Me Hard,” out today. The track introduces international audiences to the emotional depth and distinctive storytelling that have made Kim a defining voice in South Korea’s contemporary music scene. Kim has consistently charted in the Korean music space with song releases such as “Rain” and “Me After You.” And this EP has the potential to do the same.
Since his debut in 2014, Kim is commonly known for his work in ballads and heartfelt original soundtracks for TV shows. He has the unique ability to create catchy melodies while also pulling on the heartstrings of listeners, giving his sound a unique identity. Songs like “Every Day, Every Moment” from Should We Kiss First? and “So Long” from Hotel del Luna are his most standout pieces. Kim is also known for his emotional resonance, giving words to strong emotions tied to love and loneliness.
The single “Love Me Hard” is a comforting but passionate song. It’s a hopeless romantic’s search for committed love. Kim is asking for something that has become uncommon in this modern love landscape. An all-or-nothing type of love which used to be normal, is now needing to be requested. The repeating phrase in the chorus, “What keeps holding me back? // Love me hard, hard,” is that plea. Kim is asking for vulnerability instead of having a surface-level relationship. And because the song is entirely in English, Kim can touch the lives of his international fans in a way he has not done before.
The music video for “Love Me Hard” displays a very familiar scene. Captured with the vibe of a camcorder, the video follows Kim as he goes along performing typical date activities. Karaoke, walks in the park, and playing card games. All the while, the lyrics are asking for the other half of his heart-on-his-sleeve romance. The lyrics state, “I don’t fall in love, I just drown in it.” Kim’s lyrics are both romantic and dramatic, but the melody and vibe of the song keep it lighthearted and upbeat. The passion in the lyrics are wrapped in this airy disguise, as if saying the lyrics in a dramatic way is taboo.
Kim keeps his trademark sound throughout the single. His soothing and intimate voice brings the listener near. He has the ability to make any listener feel at home. And the production of the song creates that familiarity and comfort as well. The layered vocals lean towards the RnB genre, and the instrumental delves deeper into the pop landscape. The groovy rhythm brings movement to the listener, despite the lyrics describing a plea for romance. The overall production of the song maintains a catchy pop sound, but the lyrics are emotionally expressive and akin to Kim’s popular ballads and OSTs. Both of these elements combined create a beautiful melody without sounding like a traditional ballad.
Kim has made a giant leap into the international music scene with “Love Me Hard” being written entirely in English. He opens himself to the international audience in a way he has not done before. This single is an interesting reflection on the modern day love scene, and Kim has written thought-provoking and powerful lyrics to challenge that scene.
