Philadelphia-based artist Julia Pratt is set to release her new EP on May 10th through RECORDS, offering a deeply personal exploration of her journey. Drawing from her own experiences, Pratt delves into themes ranging from family turmoil to the complexities of being a woman of color in America. Through her unique blend of R&B techniques with indie-folk elements, she aims to create music that serves as a form of therapy, reminding her listeners that they are never alone.
The EP’s lead single, ‘Chronos, Cruel Handler,’ showcases Pratt’s ethereal vocals against a backdrop of looping guitar lines and subtle percussion. Named after the Greek symbol of time, the song delves into domestic imagery and questions of responsibility, embodying the relentless passage of time.
Accompanying the EP is an official video for Family Feud, directed by Samantha D’Alessio and edited by Keats. In the video, Pratt appears as a ghost of her former self, weaving in and out of flashbacks that echo the theme of eternal time explored in ‘Chronos, Cruel Handler.’
Pratt’s previous single, ‘Carolina,’ received widespread acclaim from outlets such as WXPN, 1883 Magazine, and Spotify’s Fresh Folk playlist. Building on this success, she has recently wrapped up a tour supporting Angie McMahon and will embark on further tour dates with Amos Lee and Flipturn. Her first-ever headline show in her hometown of Philadelphia is set for May 11th at The Foundry, presented by WXPN with support from Shallow Alcove and Kennedy Shaw. In June, she will also perform at the Green River Festival alongside artists like Fleet Foxes and Cake.
With her music gaining traction both locally and nationally, Pratt’s upcoming EP is poised to make a significant impact. Through her honest and introspective songwriting, she invites listeners to confront their own emotions and experiences, fostering connection and empathy along the way.
