During a season brimming with fresh sounds, few releases exude as much richness as Halima’s latest EP, EXU.
From the heart of Brooklyn, Halima continues to craft lyrical stories that span continents and genres. Raised between Lagos and London —and now thriving in Brooklyn — Halima’s music is a reflection of her heritage and vast experiences. Her newest EP released on May 24, 2024, EXU, embodies this tri-continental journey, merging elements of British soul, UK Garage, and contemporary R&B.
EXU opens with “Awaken,” a track with an instantly infectious beat and smooth vocals. “Ways” is a bit more electronic, but just as rhythmically intriguing. However, the emotional core of the project is undoubtedly “Don’t,” with its standout chant: “Don’t hold me down.” Halima’s signature sultry voice melds effortlessly with the track’s rich synthesizers.
The EP’s title and overarching themes draw from Halima’s Nigerian heritage. Exu (Eshu) is the Yoruba deity representing crossroads and change. “They are known for being the God of change, chaos, and unpredictability, so they are often misunderstood,” Halima explains. “But they are present in our lives to bring us to better versions of ourselves. This project is about facing Exu and resisting it. Then succumbing and realizing Exu is within you.”
Knowing this, it’s clear Halima’s EP is an embrace of the qualities that make her style both unique and timeless.
EXU is now available on all major streaming platforms. Follow Halima on her social channels for the latest updates, and don’t miss the chance to experience her new EP live in New York and Los Angeles this June. Tickets available now.
